Creating Custom LEGO Art with Kids: A Fun and Easy DIY Project

If your kids are obsessed with LEGO (like mine are!), why not turn their love of building into a creative and unique art project? We recently made our own custom LEGO artwork using printable LEGO coloring sheets, markers, pencils, and gold leaf—and the results were amazing! This simple DIY is fun, budget-friendly, and the perfect way to add a personal touch to your child’s space.

What You’ll Need:

  • Printable LEGO coloring sheets (Ninjago, Minecraft, classic minifigs—whatever your kids love!)
  • Markers, colored pencils, or crayons
  • Gold leaf (optional, but adds a stunning effect! I pick up mine from Sostrene Grene)
  • Glue for the gold leaf (a special adhesive or Mod Podge works well)
  • Paintbrush for applying glue
  • A frame (we used white frames for a clean, modern look like this one)
  • Scissors to cut our colouring sheets to desired size

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Print Your LEGO Designs

Search online for LEGO-themed colouring pages and print them on good-quality paper. Choose characters or scenes your kids love to make it extra special. Just Color has a good range of free Lego printable colouring pages- or you can use Google images. Choose a variety of sizes – big and small so that when it comes to assembling your artwork and layering you can fit multiple characters on your A4 sheet after they’ve been cut out.

2. Get Creative with Colors & Cutting Out

Let your kids go wild with their favorite markers, colored pencils, or crayons. Encourage them to mix colors, create shading, or even add their own details. Cut out your different sized figures carefully using a scissors and arrange them on your A4 backing sheets which is like a ‘canvas’. This project lets kids create their own Lego scene – they can assemble their figures however they want. Once they have decided where they want to put everything, it’s time to begin to stick it down using Modge Podge or PVA glue and a paintbrush. You can check out some of our favourite art supplies here.

3. Add Gold Leaf for a WOW Factor

This step takes the artwork to the next level! Apply a thin layer of glue where you want the gold leaf to stick—edges, backgrounds, or even highlights on the characters. Once the glue is tacky, gently press the gold leaf onto the paper and brush away the excess.

4. Frame It Up

Once the artwork is dry, pop it into a frame. If needed, trim the paper to fit. A simple white or black frame works well to let the art shine. Ikea, Home Savers and Woodies are all good options for budget friendly frames. I used a 30x40cm frame (with a 20x30cm opening as I used an A4 sheet for this project – so look out for a frame that accommodates that size sheet). This frame from Ikea is ideal.

5. Display with Pride!

We hung our pieces in our LEGO-themed bathroom, but they’d look great in a playroom, bedroom, or even a hallway gallery wall!

Why We Love This Project

  • Encourages Creativity – Kids get to colour, design, and make something truly unique.
  • Budget-Friendly – Uses basic craft supplies and printable sheets.
  • Customizable – Choose LEGO themes that your kids are into.
  • Perfect Keepsake – Frame their artwork to treasure for years – don’t forget to get them to sign and add the year to their masterpiece!

This DIY LEGO art project was such a hit in our house, and I love how it transformed a simple colouring activity into something frame-worthy that we can enjoy for years to come.
