A Local’s Guide to a Family Trip in County Clare

Where to Stay, Play, Eat, and Make Memories

As a proud native of County Clare, I can say with certainty — there’s nowhere quite like it for a family break. Whether you’re chasing waves, exploring ancient castles, feeding goats, or just enjoying a proper bag of chips by the sea, Clare offers a little bit of everything. And most importantly, it does it all at a pace that suits families. If you’re planning a holiday, a weekend away, or even a staycation, here’s how to make the most of a Family Trip in County Clare— with local knowledge, tried-and-tested spots, and a few hidden gems you’ll be glad you discovered.

WHERE TO STAY: Tried & Tested Family-Friendly Gems

Castledarcy Glamping, Lahinch
For something different, Castledarcy offers family glamping in a beautiful rural setting. Fairy lights, fire pits, and all the charm of camping — without the stress of setting up a tent. It’s also a great base and great value option for families keen to explore the west coast.

The Inn at Dromoland
A family favourite, especially for younger kids. There’s an indoor pool, play areas, large family rooms and it’s right next to Bunratty and Shannon — ideal for day trips and really well set up for families.

The Armada Hotel, Spanish Point
A coastal classic. Beautiful views, a great kids’ menu, and you’re steps away from the beach. There’s something very beautiful about Spanish Point in the evenings.

The Falls Hotel, Ennistymon
With a waterfall walk on-site, an indoor pool, and an eco-conscious ethos (they generate their own hydro power), this hotel is both relaxing and practical for families. Plus, Lahinch is just down the road.

THINGS TO DO: Family Adventures Big and Small

Here’s your ultimate list of things to see and do in Clare with kids — a mix of must-sees and off-the-beaten-track treasures:

Bunratty Castle & Folk Park – Costumed characters, fairy trails, thatched cottages, and a big playground. A full day out with plenty to see.

Vandeleur Walled Garden, Kilrush – A peaceful spot with blooming flowers, a playground, and a lovely café. Ideal for a slower-paced morning.

Loop Head Lighthouse – One of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the county. Climb the lighthouse and take in the dramatic cliffs and ocean views.

Aillwee Caves & Birds of Prey Centre – Go underground and explore ancient caves, then head above for falconry shows that  kids and adults will both love.

Moher Hill Open Farm & Leisure Park – Feed goats, ride mini tractors, play mini golf, and enjoy the indoor soft play on rainy days.

Craggaunowen – A living history park where ancient Ireland comes to life. Kids love exploring the crannógs and hearing stories of warriors and druids.

Dromore Woods, Ruan – Woodland trails, castle ruins, and a lake. It’s perfect for an afternoon wander with a picnic.

The Burren National Park & Lough Avalla Farm Loop – This hidden loop walk takes you through farm trails and limestone pavements with views that stretch forever. Kids love jumping the rocks and spotting rare plants.

Poulnabrone Dolmen – An iconic ancient tomb set against the stark, Burren landscape. A quick, accessible stop with a powerful sense of history.

Kilkee Cliffs – A local favourite! These cliffs are free, often quieter than the Cliffs of Moher, and just as (if not more) impressive. Start from the Diamond Rocks Café and enjoy the stunning cliff walk loop.

Fishing in the Pollock Holes, Kilkee – These natural tidal pools are ideal for fishing with nets with the kids. The Pollock Holes are also a really popular tidal swimming spot when the tide is out and 3 natural swimming pools appear!
