Photographing Kids: The Ugly Truth

I get lots of questions about the kids, and how happy they are all the time, and how photogenic they are etc. etc. It’s hard not to snort loudly in these situations, as everyone knows there is no such thing as eternally happy children! Though when I thought about it, I realised that my blog and social media accounts probably do portray a life that is a far stretch from our actual reality. Being honest, behind the camera, and behind closed doors, I am winging parenthood and loosely keeping my shit together from day to day, whilst torturing my children by means of making them do weird and stupid stuff that I can photograph. So I thought I would share a few out-takes of photographing kids.

Often times when people say to me, ‘God the boys are so great to sit for you like that’ I laugh, and pull out my phone to show the reality of the situation. The reality is for every one great photograph, there is likely to be 15 to 20 shoddy ones. No exaggeration.

For the most part, the photos where my kids are happy and laughing are the ones I share because obviously I want people to know that generally they are good craic and fun loving, easy going little people (even if it’s not always the case). Happy baby pictures spread happy feelings, are lighthearted and frankly good for the soul. That said in the name of keeping it real, I thought I’d share some of the less seen footage of photographing kids. These shots will probably result in a good snort of laughter, because they highlight my questionable parenting skills and sometimes hilarious and non-compliant children.
